For the past thirty four years there has been a group of islanders who have been meeting to discuss American interest and involvement Hilton Head Island World Affairs Council in foreign affairs. What started as a small informal group has grown into a 970 member World Affairs Council of Hilton Head.

Hilton Head’s WAC in 2015/16 will hold 14 Friday speaker programs between October and May, plus additional events like the Evening Speaker Series. The WAC feel their membership and attendance is so good due to the number of Hilton Head Island and Lowcountry residents who want to expand their own knowledge and understanding of the meaning of global events. Being an affiliate of the World Affairs Council of America, Hilton Head’s WAC has the opportunity to attract national and international speakers.

Some of the 2015/16 season high profile speakers include;

  • October 2nd: George Perkovich
    who spoke on Ramifications of the Iranian Nuclear Agreement.
    November 20: Kingsley Moghalu (former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria)
    will speak on why Nigeria could become one of the world’s leading economics by 2030.
  • February 5:, Robert Zoellich former President of the World Bank. These are just a few of the speakers.

High School World Affairs Competition Furthers Beaufort Academics
In addition to the Speaker Series, the WAC works with the area youth of Beaufort County. The premier youth program is the Academic World/Quest. All five public high schools take part in the competition of world affairs, geography and international relations.
